Seriell Ballade [Live at OsloProg 2002]

about

Recorded live at Amatøren during OsloProg 2002.

Seriell ballade is an experimental journey into territories seldom visited by rock bands. This track was written by Anders in the mid 1990’s, originally intended for wind quartet, but later rearranged for Panzerpappa. It was initially the third part of a four-part suite based on a deck of cards and serialism, a compositional technique where predefined series is used to manipulate different musical elements. Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique is often held as the first example of serialism. He ordered the twelve tones of the chromatic scale in rows that provided the basis for melody, harmony and variations for several of his compositions. Others - Webern, Boulez and Stockhausen to mention but a few - took the idea one step further and started to organise all sorts of musical elements in series that structured compositions or even opera cycles. For “Seriell ballade” series were constructed by drawing randomly without replacement from a deck of cards. Each suite then defined a series of 13 elements; these series were converted into meter, tonal progression, rhythm and expression. In addition the joker could at times interrupt or disrupt the series.
