Fisjonsvisjon [Live at Amatøren 2004]

about

Recorded live at Amatøren in 2004 during the release concert for Farlig Vandring.

This is the first real composition that Jarle wrote down on paper, way back in 1995 when he got hold of his first midi keyboard controller and an antiquated Roland CM32-LA sound module. This opened a whole new world for him, coming from rehearsal room headbanging with several death metal bands - finally it was possible to work with through-composed music in completely different ways than before, with instant gratification through the sequencer software's playback function.

At the time, he was into mostly metal music, but had also started discovering bands such as King Crimson, Yes, Genesis and Gentle Giant. Another great love for him was, embarrassingly, fusion music, and not the credible jazz-rock played by Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Return To Forever (though he loved those bands as well!) - no, his hero at the time was guitarist Frank Gambale and other shredders. So the tune, originally entitled "Fusion", owed a lot to that style. And it wasn't until some years later that he discovered that parts of the composition, especially the middle section, had stylistic affinities with some Canterbury bands as well, most notably National Health.

So, to make a long story a little bit longer, when Jarle joined Panzerpappa, he had an urge to bring something "to the table", namely some new musical material, and he presented "Fusion". The band liked it, and wanted to play it, but the title had to be changed into something in Norwegian (band rules apply!), so it ended up being called - "Fisjonsvisjon"...
