Like the song "Spådom" from our most recent album, "Pestrottedans", this particular tune is one of the residues from Panzerpappa's pretty ambitious "Stiløvingar"-project ("Exercises In Style" in English).

The plan was to put Oulipou-writer Raymond Queneau's book Exercises De Style into music. In the book, the same trivial story is told 99 times, each in a particular "style" or "genre". So a short, "core" musical theme was composed, and we planned to write 99 variations on this main theme in all sorts of musical styles and for varying instrumental line-ups. We soon realised that the scope of the project was quite huge and that it would be hard to finalise it. Therefore it has been kept on ice for a few years, and should be regarded as an infinite work in progress. We did however manage to complete some 15-20 variations before putting it in the freezer.

This is variation, #92 (the variations were written in no particular order), and is entitled "Modern Style" in Queneau's book. So Jarle, who had been assigned this one, chose a Charles Mingus/third stream-type approach, and set it out for a full big band. The recording was done live by Ett Fett Big Band, a really good band from the region of Nedre Romerike just outside Oslo. Jarle plays guitar himself, and the concert (which was dedicated mainly to the music of John Scofield) took place in October 2008.
